Jodo atlanta
This is a grassroots martial arts club. I want to introduce the art of the Jo to anyone interested, and find others ready to train, train, train.
Jodo comes from the old tradition Shinto-Muso Ryu, founded by Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi in the early 1600’s in Japan. The texts Kaijo Monogatari and Nitenki recount the legendary story of how Gonnosuke challenged the Miyamoto Musashi to a duel, but was defeated. Gonnosuke then turned inward, meditated and practiced for a long time, improving himself and his technique. When Gonnosuke returned, he again challenged Musashi to a duel and this time was (possibly) triumphant.
Since then, the art of the jo has been passed down through the ages. I am studying Seitei Jodo, the standardized version of jodo created in 1968, different from Shinto-Muso Ryu. I would like to continue this tradition in my own small way. I am also learning Shinto Muso ryu, the koryu that jodo is based on, however this is not available for learning at Jodo Atlanta at this time.
The jo is a deceptively simple weapon. It is a stick that is officially 127.6cm long and 2.4cm in diameter. You can see it as just a stick, but it is symmetrical, provides your hands complete freedom of movement, and is powerful. If a solid piece of wood is coming at you and you’re not sure what to do, you’re going to have a bad day.
Training with the jo focuses on waiting for the opponent to show harmful intent and responding to keep them in check. Precise perception, quick reflexes, and your fighting spirit will see you to success.
Because we are training with weapons, all students must be 16 years or older. All students must also sign a liability waiver before starting to train.
